The Battle of Eregion Part 1

Another belated report, this time of our pre-Christmas 2019 extravaganza. This was a refight of a fairly obscure Middle Earth battle, using (mostly) WFB 2nd edition, and our usual motley assortment of old citadel, Grenadier and suchlike models. It features Elrond, Celeborn, Glorfindel, 3 different armies entering at different times from 3 different table edges, multiple units wearing mithril. And Sauron. Wearing the One Ring. At the highpoint, we had about 600 models on the table. Most of them were painted. It was a hoot. Part 1 is my attempt at a narrative battle report, Part 2 will explain more about the scenario; I may even include some rules and lists.

Orcs vs High Elves 2,500 pt KoW

Hopefully a fairly quick write up of a recent outing for our Kings of War WFB3 army lists, which was actually the first run out for the High Elf list. We had about 6 hours to set up and play in, and talked ourselves out of trying to do WFB2. (I’ve been doing this Oldhammer thing for about 2½ years now, and still haven’t brought myself to actually play third edition again). Since it looked like Kings of War was the name of the game, I suggested 2,500 pts, naively thinking that would be about equivalent to 3,000 pts of Warhammer kit. Well, maybe a bit more, as the images will show. I think the High Elf force I fielded, including the 3 wizards, wouldn’t have given me much change from 4,000 points. Which is funny, because 2,000 pts of KoW feels a bit smaller than 3,000. Continue reading

Orcs v. Dwarfs – 3,500 pt WFB 2nd edition

A very belated write up of our Fantasy Battle game from BOYL 2019. This was played using Warhammer 2nd edition, with most of the additional rules and amendments from Ravening Hordes, but using the 3rd edition army lists, magic rules and character classes, mainly because we know them better, but also because the minimums in the RH lists are crazy. Dwarfs v. Wood Elves –2,000 pt Kings of War

Last week me and M managed our first actual wargame since the summer. This was also the first playtest of the Kings of War lists I’ve been writing based on the classic WFB 3rd edition army lists. More details of this quixotic project will appear in due course, but really, it has two primary motives: to convince M to play Kings of War, and to play old-school Warhammer without actually using the Warhammer rules.
